Excavating the Present finds itself at the intersection of the archeological and personal. Carrying forward a previous project titled In the Light of Time (2025) on Ladakh’s rock art, this film extends to South India and the filmmaker’s own familial history. The petroglyph becomes a segue to think about how we carry both the immediacy of the present and the weight of the past and future in a single form. How might archeological artifacts help with this crisis of the individual in relation to a collective? How do we grapple with mapping our existence along the lines of ancestry and geography?
