Discoveries of petroglyphs in Ladakh opened doors down a time tunnel. Our installation consists of the filmed realities here in conversation with larger thematic questions, reflections, and connections. We bring together these materials to ask: How might different artifacts inform one’s tryst with identity and belonging?
BBC: Gleaning (verb.): Gleaning is the ancient practice of gathering up leftover crops after harvest.
Agnes Varda: “There is another woman gleaning in the film; it’s me” (Gleaners and I)
Jahnavi Pradeep: Being in Ladakh over the summer of 2024 was a desensitization to the spectacle. Living amidst the most magnificent peaks, nothing seemed impossible. Rock art dating back to “prehistory”? Sounds regular. And yet, there was a magic that the space drew. I was drawn to understanding what we make of remnants and dead end objects that have lost value to reproduce? I slowly began a process of gleaning, attempting to familiarize this unfamiliar.
